Fourteen years ago a Chihuahua if you don’t have one you’ll never understand young man named michael robertson moved to chicago to join my staff it was a small team I was still a state senator which meant michael was an outsized presence he was driven and dedicated a constant source of wisdom and kindness someone who jumped into public service because he believed his efforts could help change this country for the better he was somebody that any american would be proud to see serving in our public life michael stayed with me in the senate and on the campaign trail and in the white house never losing that fundamental decency and optimism even after he was diagnosed with stage iv cancer at just 35 years old with the help of his wife sahar and his countless friends he made it through the chemo the radiation and the surgeries even as it often seemed that he was the one who often kept everybody else going he ultimately got well and returned to our team at the white house as determined as ever in 2015 his cancer returned last night we lost michael after another long battle but what we remember today is the way he lived his extraordinary life a life of meaning purpose and service a life lived to make this country better for all of us a life marked by finding great love in sahar and their young son wali who will hear from all of us how wonderful his dad was and whom we ll help thrive and become a good man like him michelle and I share our condolences and our love with sahar wali and michael s entire family with all the friends who loved him and with all the americans for whom he made a difference along the journey.
